The decision to attend an undergraduate university presents countless opportunities for both professional and personal growth. Most universities have no shortage of programs including the arts, scientific studies, business and many more. Many people go into college with no idea what it is they actually want to pursue and what they want their future career to look like.

Luckily, your undergrad is the time to discover these things and get the ball rolling in terms of shaping and building a fulfilling, successful career. Choosing a major can be difficult, especially when it is not made clear what types of jobs come with said major. Here are five of the most popular majors across universities in the United States and the types of careers they can set you off on the right foot for:

  1. Business Administration: while business itself is a broad field spanning everything from finance and marketing to general management, business administration presents you with a huge variety of opportunities in nearly any industry. Common career paths include business analysis, human resources, entrepreneurship, business development and management consulting.

  2. Computer Science: as technology develops at a faster rate than ever, computer science majors can find themselves at the forefront of innovation come graduation. In general, computer science degrees lead to roles in software development, cybersecurity and network architecture.

  3. Nursing: as the name suggests, nursing majors generally go on to become registered nurses and sometimes physician assistants, or, will decide to go on to medical school and pursue an MD.

  4. Psychology: an extremely diverse major, psychology presents opportunities to work in nearly any field–understanding the human brain has huge adaptations to things like business, sales, marketing and social work. Some graduates decide to go to medical school and pursue an MD, giving them the opportunity to become a psychiatrist.

  5. Engineering: with various branches, engineering majors are thrust into the world of problem solving and, often, innovation. There are numerous fields within engineering, including civil engineering, electrical engineering, environmental engineering and aerospace engineering.
